You knew the warm weather wouldn't last, didn't you?

Hi there.  Honestly, did you think that those 70's and near 80's were gonna last?  One of the things about being a gardener in this area is expect the unexpected.  Trust me, I was tempted by the siren's call of this recent warm weather to start the lettuce seeds outside, but I knew better.  It can wait another 3 to 4 weeks.
Ohio State, Kentucky, Louisville, and Kansas.  Not a bad Final Four group if you ask me.  Of the four elite eight games, I watched parts of two that were played on Saturday.  The one that intrigued me the most was the Louisville/Florida game and how 25 years ago a then up and coming coach by the name of Rick Pitino took the Providence Friars who had a guard by the name of Billy Donovan on an amazing run to the Final Four. Teacher coaching against one of his grown up pupils.  I loved that Providence team and the way they played defense and made three pointers.  What people forget is that it was such a rough time personally for Pitino and his family.  He had a son named Daniel die as an infant during that stretch and coaching that team was his way to get away from that agony and sadness.
So Tim Tebow is a Jet.  Here's my take on it.  Can he help them win?  I think so.  He'll sell a lot of jerseys, t-shirts and other Jets apparel.  The past 2 years and change the Jets have been making headlines with the brashness of Rex Ryan, the trips to the AFC championship games and other statements about the new stadium in the Meadowlands being theirs.  So what happened?  The worst possible thing.  The Giants quietly made a statement by winning a play-off game at home after putting up so many stinkers in the new stadium and going on another road run finishing it off by beating Brady and Belichick a second time in 5 years for another Super Bowl title.
I don't what is making me more uneasy as the hockey playoffs approach.  The Phantoms not making the playoffs for the third straight year; or the way the Pittsburgh Penguins have been chasing down and creeping ever so closer and closer to the Rangers for the top spot in the Eastern Conference.  If Sidney Crosby keeps getting healthier, better watch out.   The Pens will be awfully tough to beat.
Kind of sad this morning.  Heard about the passing of a great author as well as a boxing and sports historian, Bert Sugar.  He was one of those old school guys who you could listen talk for hours on end.  His voice, trademark fedora hat and cigar.  Gonna miss him. He left us too soon.
As a public service announcement, since March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness month, I declare it is not my fantasy to join Ozzy Osbourne on a trip to New York to get a colonoscopy!  Between the radio and tv promos on CBS owned media properties, I will be glad when March ends this Saturday.
Love this story.  A kid from Tartan High School in Oakdale Minnesota got creative when it came to finding a date for his senior prom.  He sent out tweets to adult film stars asking if they would like to go with him.  2 said yes, but the school board said no.  Which is fine and I understand their concerns, which were legit.  However I get the impression that none of the school board members had seen the teen movie, "The Girl Next Door."  Funny movie that can be a guilty pleasure every now and then.
So a recent dating survey found that 50 percent of men would choose looks over intelligence when it came to going out with a woman.  That same survey also revealed that 80 percent of men are intimidated by smart women.  I want both.  You know Sofia Vergara looks with Megyn Kelly smarts rolled into one nice package.
Finally a big thanks from the bottom of my heart to everyone who supported me, Mike and Jason for Bowl for Kids Sake with a donation.  I love to bowl.  I'll watch the PBA tour on Bristol Tech; and any time I can use my mediocre athletic abilities to raise funds for a good cause, I'm in.  The same goes for the occasional charity golf tournament that you'll see me at.  By the way, they raised over 83 thousand dollars this year!...Happy Birthday Dr.Stevens.  You're a treasured friend to this gym freak...Leccese out.

Random thoughts on this first day of Spring

Hi there.  So here we are enjoying the end of a relatively mild winter with mid 70's and low 80's temperatures for the first few days of spring.  Why do I have this uneasy feeling that either April, May or June will end up with below average temperatures and nothing but rain and clouds.
I haven't been tempted to play golf or even think about planting lettuce yet.  I just started my eggplant and pepper seeds inside and in another week of two I figure out what tomatoes will make the cut.  I already know at least 3 that have.  It's the other 3 that are undecided plus of course 1 or 2 more from different sources that find their way into the mix so I'll have the usual 8 tomato plants. Trust me, I have plenty of friends here at the radio station and at Core who will gladly take the extras off my hands come harvest time.LOL.
On to other things.  I tune into the Devils/Rangers game last night and the first three seconds brought back memories of the Icehawks with that line brawl that occured as soon as the puck dropped.
By now you know I'm a fan of How I Met You Mother,  well I think its time to end the show.  It's reached its "Jump the Shark" episode point.  Please tell us who she is and then show Bob Saget finishing the narration to end it all.
Rosie O'Donnell's new talk show got cancelled?  I didn't even know she was back on tv in the first place.  I guess I didn't miss much, huh?
This weeks sign of the apocalyse is a four way tie between ABC who wants to make Home Alone 5!  Mike Tyson who wants bring his one person show to Broadway; (Mike Tyson is doing theater?)  The fact that another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Movie is in the works; and that a movie is also in the works based on the Garbage Patch Kids trading cards.
Mets' ownership settled up with the trustee of the victims of the Bernie Madoff ponzi scheme and will only have to pony up about 162 million dollars.  I actually like Fred Wilpon and his not so bright son Jeff.  They seem like nice folks, but they built Citi Field and you know how much I love that place...NOT!  Oops, had a sarcasm lapse again.  Sorry about that.
As for the NCAA's, it had some great drama and some nice early round stories.  Look we all loved the wins by Lehigh and Norfolk State allthough it screwed up many a persons brackets.
I just don't get why all the courts at the arenas where they are playing the games now look the same.  Sort of boring if you ask me.
Congrats to Union College for winning the ECAC hockey championship last weekend.
O.K. so I decide to wear dress shoes instead of sneakers to the office today and people think something is up?  At least I didn't wear white socks.  I knew better.
Finally, Bowl for Kids is this Sunday at Spare time in South Glens Falls and I need donations!  You can make one by going to www.creatingmagic.org/bfks/wckmwcql and you can click on my name and it will take you to my page and help me raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Southern Adirondacks.  Enjoy the nice weather...Leccese out!

Re-connecting

Hi there.  With our high school sports broadcast season having come to an end, I just want to thank all the area high schools, athletic directors, coaches, players and fans for another great year.  It's a labor of love for us here at the radio ranch bringing you those football, basketball and hockey games.  In less than a month I'll get that first draft of the 2012 football schedule and I'll grab my hi-lighter and start marking potential games to do.  By the way, first day of football practice is 5 months away August 13th, with opening day set for August 31st.  Way too early.
One more high school sports note and that is the retirement of Doug Kenyon as Section 2 chairman.  Doug is a great guy who has helped me countless times.  He'll still be involved with the State Basketball Championships.  Who ever takes over his job with Section 2 will have some shoes the size of Bob Lanier's 22's to fill.
On to other things.  Yesterday I had one of those days I should have done a long time ago.  I re-connected with my past. I went to Whitehall and north to Clemons and Dresden. When I first moved here 23 years ago, Dan and his brother Eric introduced to me to a lot of their friends and one of them was the Brown family.  Jim and Kim and their two sons Scott and Mark.  I spent a lot of time in Whitehall those first two years, playing softball at Mud Creek and getting to know the people.  Had some real good times in Whitehall.  It had been years since I was in town.  Mark and Scott all grown up now and Scott has his own Maple Sugar house.  Right at Home Maple.  They had their first open house and making the drive and being with them again was in one word...awesome.  The smell from the sugar house alone was worth the trip.  Tasting fresh warm syrup right from the boiler.  Its like in the fall when you get warm cider donuts right out of the fryer.  Unbelievable!  Dan brought his grandkids and they just got to be kids, playing in the mud and looking at the chickens and horses that are the property.  We all had fun.  Driving through the Slate Valley on Route 22 like I did a lot from 1989 through 1990.  It was good to be back.  Next time which I hope will be sooner rather than later, I'll stop at Dan's Mom and Stepdad's home and re-connect with them.
Big thanks to everyone at Warrensburg High and North Warren Central School for the fun at Donkey basketball last week.  I always have a great time being a part of those events with the staff and kids and the donkey's didn't have any accidents on the gym floor either nights.
You know I have to bring it up, but this weeks' sign of the apocalype is Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi's pregnancy.  You think Kim Kardashian's jealous because of the financial windfall Ms.Polizzi will be getting from this?  You know Kimmy, if you'd stayed married to Kris Humphries, that could have been you reaping the financial gain.  You'll do anything to make a buck on television.
Five words for Rush Limbaugh.  Shut up and go away!
Not one but two from the, "You gotta try this stuff because its that yummy" department.  First from the healthier choice department.  Kashi Go Lean Honey Almond Flax Crunch cereal.  It's good for you and delicious both snacking out of the box or in a bowl with milk.  Second, head to Target and indulge in a pint of Ben and Jerry's Volun-tiramisu ice cream.  Anytime I can eat something as sinfully good as that stuff is and help a good cause, I'm all for it.
My pasta maker arrived and I spent part of Saturday learning how to use it.  Making the dough, running it through the rollers and cutters.  If I had the cooking skills I have now along with my hobbies like gardening, photography and other interests back in the college days, I might have met someone and married them.  Instead, still single at 46 and my hopes and optimism are fading fast.
I might just have to upgrade to one of those smart phones so I can get the whip app that was so funny when they used it during "The Big Bang Theory's" last episode.
Bowling for Kids Sake in two weeks and you can help me out by making a pledge online at www.creatingmagic.org/bfks/kenleccese.
Enjoy the high school or college basketball this weekend or if you get a chance, take a trip to one the maple sugar houses doing an open house in Warren or Washington counties.  You'll have a blast...Leccese out.

Happy Birthday, Jerry Hicks

Hi there.  Hard to believe that its March already.  Spring training baseball, the NCAA Men's basketball tournament and finally winter arrived on the first day of the month with 12 inches of snow at the home office here on Darrowsville Road at the Warrensburg/Chestertown border.
I thought it might be a rather boring week, but we've got some good stuff to talk about.
Leading off is Angelina Jolie's Oscar pose where she showed off a little too much leg and thigh for some people. Outside of having a great personality and intelligence, the two parts of a woman's body that I find most attractive are their legs and shoulders. (I explain that one some other time).  I had no problem with it.  I would have been outraged if Ms.Jolie had shown the tattoo that was a tribute at one point to her former husband Billy Bob Thorton.  She also had a necklace with a vial of his blood that she wore around her neck.  You think Angelina could do one of those Judd Apatow off beat romantic comedy type movies with someone like Paul Ruud or Ryan Reynolds?  Ponder that one for a while.
I saw the Superbowl commercial featuring Mean Joe Greene spoofing his classic Coca Cola ad this time selling some Downey product that makes your clothes smell better.  I found it so wrong and not funny.
Last week it was Ben and Jerry's over a flavor of frozen yogurt, this week its Disney.  They are in the process of introducing a new attraction in Epcot Center that will promote a healthier lifestyle and help in the fight against childhood obesity.  The "villains" are overweight and called Lead Bottom and Snacker.  They eat junk food and watch television.  The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance claims its insensitive and promotes negative stereotypes.  Everything seems to be insensitive and promote negative stereotypes these days!  So Disney has decided to cave in and re-tool the exhibit.  Hopefully they'll also re-tool the heroes called Will Power and Callie Stenics! Great names.  You'll think they'll change them because they're being insensitive to my higher than average level of intelligence?  Chalk another one up for the PC police.
Finally played Angry Birds.  Haven't got addicted to it yet.  I'll stick to Texas Hold 'em and 3D Slots.
Props to Dan and Pete for the interview they did with Bobby Dick Thursday morning in regards to the passing of Davy Jones of the Monkees.  Look, the Monkees were cool, funny, and the music they did was good stuff written by some great songwriters and musicians.  However, I think we've all heard "Daydream Believer" way too much the past few days.  I'll stick to 'Valleri" or "A little bit me, a little bit you."
My high school alma mater in NJ last weekend played for the big school Shore Conference ice hockey championship.  The game ended in a 4-4 tie after regulation and a 5 minute overtime.  The powers that be decided to end the game at that point and declare co-champions.  No shoot out, no 2nd OT or how many OT's it would take to win it.  The PC police must have had a hand in that one before they went after Disney.  "You played a great a game guys, you're both winners in our opinion!  Let's share the title."
Oops, sorry having a relapse of sarcasm throughout this entry.  Better call my life coach and let him know what's been happening.  I've been doing so well for these 2 months up until this point.
$395,000 dollars.  Good job kids at South Glens Falls High School with your Marathon dance.  It's nice to see a good story among all the negative ones that seem to involve bullying, or this week about a 10 year old girl who died after a fight with another female classmate over a boy.  10 years old!
Sorry to see Queensbury lose to Saranac Lake in the hockey regionals.  On a good note, I don't have to go to Utica this year!
Finally, if you see Jerry Hicks today or tomorrow, wish him a Happy Birthday.  Good friend and a good person...Leccese out.
