Taking a Break

Hi there.  Just to let everyone know that in the next couple of days if you don't see the link to find The Greenhouse Effect on the WCKM or Hits web pages, there's good reason.  I'm taking a little break from writing the blog.  I've been finding it harder and harder to come up with new entries.  I used to be able have ideas and crank out something at least once or sometimes twice a week.  Now it seems the only thing I've been ready to do is throw in the towel.  Wave the white flag of surrender.
Went to see Saving Mr.Banks the Disney movie about the making of Mary Poppins.  Fascinating story to say the least and Tom Hanks is Oscar worthy playing Uncle Walt.
Happy Holidays and til next time, whenever that maybe...Leccese out.

987 and 36 - 7

Hi there.  Well its that wonderful time of year again where the holidays meld together and become such a blur that you wake up on January 2nd and have to write 2014 on your checks, lol.  Sort of the way football and basketball seasons have been the past two years for me.  A blur with no down time between seasons.
You got to give Queensbury credit.  In this age of no huddle, quick count, empty backfield, multiple receiver, shotgun and pistol read option formations, John Irion did it the old fashioned way.  Grinding it out running the ball with 9 or 10 guys in a rotation behind a line that once it started going down hill is tough to stop.  Let me describe it this way, trying to tackle a back in that double wing is like trying to find the needle in the haystack. Since most teams try to stop it by putting 9 guys up close, if the line gets to the second level of the defense, the big play takes place.  The other thing Queensbury did well was play defense and they had serious game on the other side of the ball.  If the 3 interior linemen didn't get to you, the ends or the 2 linebackers would.  The coaching staff also made the right adjustments at half time.  My favorite quote during this whole great run the Spartans had came from Marcus Hughes who was the coach of the team that they played in the semi-finals.  His team was wishing they wouldn't have to play Burnt Hills.  He told his squad that Queensbury had beaten Burnt Hills, not once but twice so be careful what you wish for.
On to other things.
I remember as a kid watching the Macy's Thanksgiving parade and loving those big helium balloons.  As an adult, I want to see one get loose from its handlers and fly over some restricted air space around New York and have it shot down by either the Civil Air Patrol or Air Force. This year I had to settle for Spiderman losing a battle with a Central Park tree and getting a gash on his arm.
Lady Gaga and the Muppets. Ummm, O.K. There has been much worse, like Carrie Underwood's performance in "The Sound of Music."  That was brutal.
Come on Seth MacPharlane, did Brian really have to die?  Chris and Meg would have made better choices.
For all the debate about the BCS, the two best teams in Florida State and Auburn are playing for the national title.  Sorry Ohio State and Alabama, look at yourself in the mirror and realize that the college football universe really does not revolve around you.
Robin Williams new sitcom "The Crazy Ones" isn't half bad, but it would be nice to see Pam Dawber make a cameo appearance as one of his ex-wives in a future episode.
I was given a copy of Billy Crystal's new book on CD and I'm listening to it driving around in SUV.  My conclusion.  He is still a great stand up comic and one funny cat.
Finally the numbers in the title of this entry stand for 2 things.  36 - 7 was the final score of Queensbury's championship game win to complete a perfect 13-0 season.  Thanks guys for saving a seat on the bus for John and I to come along for the ride.  987, well that is amount of kids we adopted this year in our annual "Adopt a Child" for the holidays campaign.  We shattered last years mark and coming up Thursday and Friday is the annual charity auction.  The generosity of this community blows me away every time.  Leccese out.

25 years later and I'm still here

Hi there.  The other title I thought of for this entry was, "Blog neglect and catching up."  However in light of the fact that 25 years ago this month I left the comfort zone of Monmouth County NJ and moved up here to start my adult life made me change my mind.
A couple of thoughts looking back on this quarter century.  The first year probably would have been a lot easier if it wasn't for some little report called, "The Adirondacks in the 21st Century."  That made my life and any other outsiders lives a living hell.  I remember my Dad reading it and shaking his head in disbelief.  It was that worthless.
My original plan was to live here only between 5 and 10 years.  I figured I'd be in some medium to large market radio station over time.
I thought I would have been married.  When you're really picky about what you're looking for in a female partner, it comes with the territory.  By the way, I've never wanted kids.  After what I put my parents and family through growing up, I had no desire to follow in their footsteps and add to the population.
Glens Falls is one amazing town with some wonderful people that could really go forward if it moved on from the whole "Hometown U.S.A." thing. Its 70 years now.  It's hindering the progress, not helping it.
Queensbury, Saratoga, Wilton and Washington County remind me so much of where I grew up.
We have the best snow removal crews in the country, period.
The three things that I missed from home 25 years ago were a good slice of pizza, chinese food, and bagels.  25 years later, I've found the chinese food and good pizza.  Bagels, well that's another story.  When we had Brueggers around here, that was the closest thing to what I was used to when it comes to a bagel.
I miss the days of going to the Civic Center Saturday nights when it still was the place to be on a Saturday night and either before or after a hockey game making my way to Lou's Pizza since I would park behind JE Sawyer's. Something about those square slices. If Lou's was still around when the radio station offices were on Glen street, I could have eaten lunch there everyday.
I've been lucky to meet some amazing people through my job or other things I've done who's friendship I cherish and wouldn't trade for the world..
A couple of other things that have nothing to do with my 25 years being here.
If Chris Farley were alive today, think about how great he would be imitating Toronto mayor Rob Ford.  I think Toronto's chance for an NFL expansion franchise took a major hit when during that press conference in which Ford admitted doing the drugs and alcohol he was wearing a tie with NFL teams' logos.
Come you crazy people.  It was just Miley being Miley lighting up that strange cigarette thing at the EMA's. We do know it wasn't one of those cigars with the plastic tip.
Lady Gaga was really good as host/musical guest on SNL last weekend.
If memory serves me, our wonderful federal government once spent spent six hundred dollars per toilet seat.  With that in mind, you knew they couldn't create a working website for its citizens to sign up for affordable health care, didn't you?
Forgive me for writing this, but two words I've become so sick of hearing and reading in the about in the news are bullying and inclusion.
I watched the Bizarre Foods America episode that was all about New Jersey.  This Jersey kid doesn't ever remember eating the, "Jersey thing" known as "Taylor ham or Pork roll"  or what ever its called growing up.
This weeks sign of the apocalypse:  Cap'n Crunch Cereal Snack Mix.
I would like for just one day, just one day something positive spoken or written about the sport of football in the news.
Here's to 25 more years and the fading hope of meeting someone...Leccese out.

I thought I'd never see that at the dollar store

Hi there.  Since this entry is being written on Monday October 14th, Happy Columbus Day and Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian friends.
O.K. time for the fun to begin.  I'll start with, "The Jug Game" which was entertaining and for the second week in a row  a rivalry match-up lived up to its billing.  Back and forth action, big plays and a thrilling ending with Glens Falls scoring with 72 seconds left and Hudson Falls making one last push to pull one out in the end.  I'll leave the commenting on the officiating to John Pratt.
"The Jug Game" saved my football watching from being the ultimate disaster.  Both the Giants and Rutgers played last Thursday night and both teams blew it in the fourth quarter on interceptions by their quarterbacks.  Then to torture myself even more, I flipped on the Rangers game in Anaheim and they got spanked 6- 0 after losing 9-2 in the night before.  I just should have watched Big Bang Theory and shut off the television at 8:30.
Is it too much to ask Outside the Lines or any other investigative sports shows to do features about the concussion problems other sports like soccer, lacrosse and ice hockey have.  Can we lay off football for just a little while, please.
So this 15 year old high school kid in Ohio is announcing a middle school football game when a player of Haitian descent from the other team runs for a touchdown.  No big deal, right?  Wrong!  He used a call by Fox Sports play by play guy Gus Johnson who can be very creative with his descriptions.  Gus, during a Titans/Jaguar game described a Chris Johnson long touchdown run this way and this is what young teen said. "He's got that getting away from the cops speed!"  This kid was threatened on Facebook by people who were offended and was punished by his school. To use a quotation from the movie Stripes, "Lighten up Francis!"  I understand everyone being upset, but I was laughing after hearing Johnson's actual call on YouTube.
Miley Cyrus, what planet are you on?  Are you and Amanda Bynes now BFF's?  That Today show interview with Matt Lauer really changed a lot peoples minds about you...NOT!
A new survey that was in the show prep we use revealed that 30 percent of people don't like their Facebook friends but won't delete them because they're too nosey!  Two more from the survey.  Just 10 percent of an average person's friends list are considered actual friends; and 58 percent of people keep people they don't like as Facebook friends so they can still see photos and statuses.  I bring this up because I've thought a lot about Facebook lately.  I'm getting to the point of wanting to un-friend certain ones because I feel like I'm an after thought in their lives.  My sister is still upset because I won't friend her. I've told her that I refuse to friend her or any family member. If I have to use a social media site to know what's happening in a family members' life, it's actually insulting when they could just call me on the phone and talk instead of typing away on their phone, tablet or computer on some social media site.  Sometimes I think I post on my page because I'm looking for the attention and to see if I get a decent amount of "likes" or a comment or two.  One more Facebook thing and this was a good one.  When you're so far away from the place you grew up in, you wonder if anybody remembers you.  I got a Facebook friend request from a high school friend.  I still haven't come down from that high a week later.
By the way 98 Five CKM and Hits 95 Nine now have iPhone, iPad, and Android apps so you can listen anywhere using those devises.  Go to the app store and download them and then listen all you like while playing Candy Crush, Angry Birds and other games.
Finally to end this entry on a more humorous note, last Saturday I go into a local dollar store to buy some cable ties and a candy bar.  The store had just opened and I'm on line about 3 people back.  The person at the front of the line had between 15 and 20 dollars worth of stuff to purchase and he handed the cashier a 100 dollar bill.  Big problem.  So they open up another register.  I'm second in line and the person who is ahead of me buys a $1.50 loaf of bread and uses his debit/credit card to pay for it.  I was shaking my head on the drive to Glens Falls the entire time after witnessing that.  FYI- I paid with a $5.00 bill...Leccese out.

Upset specials and a couple of other thoughts

Hi there.  Keeping things short and sweet this week.  Upset specials.  Well after 2 weeks we're an even 2 and 2 on the year with East Carolina and the Chargers winning.  This week's college upset special has the Golden Domers over Arizona State and for some reason this may be the best chance for Jaguars to win a game as they'll beat the Rams.
You want to why both the Giants and Steelers are 0-4?  You can't win games when your pass rush isn't getting to other teams' quarterback and your offensive line isn't protecting your quarterback and not making holes for the running backs to run through
Hello in there Alex Rodriguez.   Tell me what color is the sky in your world?  What's worse are these protests in support of this guy.  He's being targeted because of his ethnic background?  Then we have his ambulance chasing big name legal team and the multiple lawsuits.  It's like gunmen who commit these horrible shootings and then pull the trigger on themself so not get caught.  "If I'm going down, I'm taking you all down with me."  A-Rod, you're drowning in quick sand, so just play nice and ask for a hand out of this mess.
For all the mismatches and blowout games we end up broadcasting on the radio during the year, every once in while you get one like we had between Warrensburg and Lake George where on the final play a double reverse option pass back to the quarterback ends up winning the game as time runs out.  Two arch rival small schools playing in front of a big crowd  for bragging rights.  It doesn't get much better than that.  Hopefully the "Jug Game" will have that same drama.
I'm not ready for hockey season just yet.
What did I tell you.  The Pirates home ballpark PNC Park is best one in MLB.  Sorry Boston fans, Fenway has some serious competition.
Enjoy the weekend...Leccese out.

Upset Specials and some random thoughts

Hi there.  Some quick thoughts as we head into the weekend but first "upset special" time.  Last week was a case of ass whooping.  Both Kent State and the Arizona Cardinals got spanked.  However there was a lot of bad football last weekend as many big time programs needed that extra scrimmage time before conference play begins by guaranteeing a big check to some average Division 1AA program and just embarrassing them.  Don't lie Ohio State, Louisville and Miami don't tell me you thought these teams were gonna be national title contenders when you scheduled them.  However most big time college programs are guilty of scheduling cupcakes.  Got to keep the alumni and student body happy with big wins, right boys.
This weeks upset specials are the East Carolina Pirates knocking off the North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill for your college upset special, and the pro take the Chargers who are home underdogs to defeat the "How 'bout them Cowboys!"
Three weeks into the high school season and of the local teams we cover I'd have to say Queensbury is the best of the bunch, but we'll see how good when they take on the defending state champions in Burnt Hills this week.  How come some teams every year just re-load while others are constantly stuck in quick sand?
One coach I always feel does the best coaching job every year and the record doesn't always show it is Kevin Stimpson of Fort Edward.  That small group of kids he has always seems to play hard and are fundamentally sound.  Love watching the Forts play.
One last football note.  I wish I could have been there to watch last Saturday, but my alma mater Franklin Pierce now plays "Sprint" Football.  It's a lower weight version of regular football and the boys from Rindge NH took on Cornell in a game that is played every year at Saratoga High School. They won 13 - 6.  Then I get home and see Rutgers on Bristol Tech beat Arkansas for a second straight year.  In the mid '70's, Rutgers took on the Tennessee Volunteers and the Vols coach was asked about them and he replied, "What's a Rutgers?"  Still love that quote.  I hope you SEC boys now know that us Jersey boys can play some big time football too!  Remember we invented the game, it just took 140 plus years to be good at it.
More and more we're becoming one overly sensitive, politically correct, screwed up nation.  When kids can vandalize a vacant home by having a party that the Delta House from Animal House would be envious of, brag about it on social media sites and then these kids parents can sue the home owner for calling the kids out for doing it and spinning it so the kids are the victims, something is wrong!  Good for Brian Holloway.
Is it just me or does, "The Mother" who Ted will end up with kind of remind you both in looks and personality of Lilly?
Bad news single guys, Kaley Cuoco from Big Bang Theory announced her engagement.  My good friend John Pratt was a little depressed over that one.  Welcome to my world, JP.
If you haven't been, Sweet Frog Frozen Yogurt in South Glens Falls is the real deal!  It is scary good stuff.  Take this recommendation from a hard core foodie who knows his stuff.  If you're on a date, or if you have a family treat the spouse and kids and enjoy a frozen treat from this place.
Got apples and pumpkins and I'm searching for a pumpkin ice cream recipe...Leccese out.

Catching up and the return of "Opie's Upset Specials!"

Hi there. Finally found some time to write a new entry.  First we begin with a football season tradition that started some 17 years ago when I did Sunday morning's at another radio station. "Opie's Upset Specials."  Each week I pick one college and one pro upset game straight up, with no point spread involved.  First for the college upset special where I'll go to State College, Pa and see the Nittany Lions of Penn State lose to the Kent State Golden Flashes from the MAC. For the first pro upset special, I like the Cardinals beating the Saints who are a totally different team away from the Super Dome.
Staying on the topic of football comes the choice of Bruno Mars to be the half-tme entertainment for this years' Superbowl in the Meadowlands.  Solid choice.
I know the NFL is really pushing the safety/anti concussion thing, but not allowing teams to wear throwback uniforms with different helmets because they are unsure the helmets are safe is being a little too nit picky.  Come on Roger, us hardcore NFL fans need to see Buccaneer Bruce and Pat Patriot make a return appearance at least once a year.
One more football note and I'll move on.  There are 3 sports documentaries I would highly recommend.  Showtime has a new one on Lawrence Taylor. NBC Sports Network produced a great one on Earl Campbell the former Houston Oilers running back; but the best comes from HBO on the life of Marty Glickman who is the big redwood tree when it comes to sports play by play.  He was that influential and a pioneer of the way sports is called on radio and television.  He also was an outstanding football player at Syracuse and an Olympic sprinter who made the 1936 Olympic team that went to Berlin, Germany  Glickman and Sam Stoller were taken off the U.S. 400 meter relay team because they were Jewish and no one wanted to offend Hitler.  Find a way to watch this one.
Sending props out to the Boston Red Sox for the classy ceremony and the cool gifts they bestowed upon Mariano Rivera last Sunday night before his last game at Fenway.  The portrait and pitching rubber from the visitors bullpen were nice, but the best was the #42 placard from the Green Monster scoreboard.  I would want one of those for my bedroom wall.  Even better than the gold record of "Enter Sandman" that the Indians gave Mariano from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
With the fall tv schedule upon us I noticed Will Arnett is trying his hand again at another sitcom.  This time on CBS following "Bing Bang Theory" and it co-stars Beau Bridges who I've heard of and some actress who I guess everyone has heard of except me of course.
Bill Engvall and Bill Nye the Science Guy on Dancing with the Stars?  Must have reached the bottom of the list of male possibilities.  Tom Bergeron, here's your sign.  The only reason anyone is going to watch is to see Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi.
I watch Fox Cable News on occasion in the morning and they have this stable of very intelligent female news hosts, readers, correspondents...whatever you want to call them.  Oh by the way they also happen to be very attractive blondes as well.  So how come when they replaced the female host of their "Fox and Friends" morning show, the best they could find was Elizabeth Hasselbeck from. "The View."  Personally I think they should have promoted from within the company.
On a lighter note, why do I keep get e-mails from someone named Adrian?.  Who the heck is she?  I know its spam with some stupid virus attached that only a fool would open.  She probably is a dude who looks just like the actor who is in those creepy credit card commercials who answers the phone with, "Hi, this Peggy. How may I help you?"
Finally after I was done with the football game that we broadcast on WWSC from Granville last Saturday afternoon, I made the first cider and donuts run on the way home.  Got the cider and also a bag of maple cotton candy.  That long wait in the donut line was worth it.  The smell of that warm dozen in the bag that sat along side me in the front passenger seat was intoxicating.  Yeah I noshed on one or two driving back.  If you can resist, you're lying to me especially if you're a parent with kids.  Resistance is futile.  Now here's an idea. Make of those air fresheners you hang in your car with the scent of apple cider and apple cider donuts.  Enjoy the weekend and by the way fall officially begins Sunday...Leccese out.

The fear of being, "That Guy" again

Hi there.  My lack of a summer which went by a like a blur has fortunately finally come to an end.  No more vacations, staff changes, and medical leaves for various ailments here at the radio ranch.  We're back to full strength and I now can concentrate on high school sports and calling games.  Last week I talked about the numbers game and how it hit Salem.   This week it hit again, only harder.  Fort Edward forfeiting its first game and cancelling its scrimmage due to low numbers.  Warrensburg having only 20 for its scrimmage due to players not having the required 11 practices needed to scrimmage.  Hoosic Valley's football season on life support after the school board held a special meeting to possibly cancel the season because even though they had 29 kids on the roster, they were worried about 9th graders playing against upper class men.  Their season was luckily spared.  Here's the future of small school 11 man football in our area.  It's called combined school squads!  Get used to it.  I read an article in one of the capital district newspapers and it talked about that topic and when I saw Maple Grove from Section 6 among the many in that area now in a combined situation, my jaw hit the floor.
So Johnny "Football" Manziel got only a 1/2 game suspension for his autograph signings.  The NCAA is one messed up organization who's leadership is like a rudderless ship.  My take on Johnny "Football" is he's nothing more than a spoiled rich kid who thinks he can do whatever he wants and doesn't care and will run off in a tantrum and take the ball with him if he's upset and doesn't get his way.  I really think his parents didn't punish him enough when he grew up.
I think Sandy Alderson should sign up to be one of those UFC or MMA fighters after the two blows he gave us Mets fans earlier this week.  First Matt Harvey most likely is headed down to Dr. James Andrews and Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow; and the trade of Marlon Byrd and John Buck to off all teams the Pirates.
When the Pittsburgh Pirates are active at the waiver trade deadline and to acquire players to make that play-off push its a good thing for baseball.  I hope the Pirates make it so every one who has never seen it will discover what I already know.  PNC Park is most beautiful of the new "retro, throwback" ballparks in MLB hands down!
Don't blink!  You've might have missed Fresno State's offense run 3 plays in the time it takes you to read this sentence.  I stayed up til 2:45am to watch them and Rutgers play Thursday night into Friday morning.  Hawaii was finished with their home game with USC before that 52 - 51 OT final actually ended.
I have to bring this up.  The VMA's and Miley Cyrus' ummmm "so-called" performance.  What did you expect? Hannah Montana finally admitting her secret identity?  The VMA's are hands down the undefeated world champion of shock value performances.  Howard Stern as, "Fart Man."  The kiss between Madonna and Brittney Spears.  The list goes on and on.  What caught my attention was the French duo known as Daft Punk and the crazy helmet, cyber being type get ups.  Reminded me of the Styx video, "Mr Roboto."
I'm I the only one who finds Judah Freidlander and his "World Champion" hats and look frightening or disgusting.
Finally the middle aged never married, single male in me started contemplating this the other day and realized a possibility.  I'm becoming "that guy" again.  In high school and college I was the, "I like you but only as a friend" or "if we went out and broke up it would ruin our friendship" guy.  Now either I'm evolving into or have evolved into, "The single, nice, male friend who has no interest me sexually that I can count on when my husband or boyfriend isn't around" guy.  It's either depressing or I'm spending way too much time over analyzing things...Leccese out.

The Numbers Game

Hi there.  This is the week where I begin going all out into football mode.  Reading all the area papers every day that cover Section 2 for any info and just two days into practices the dreaded "N" word hit me like sledgehammer.  That word is numbers.  Salem which made it to the Section 2 Class D finals had only 15 kids try out.! You need at least 16 to play and then the kids must have 11 practices to scrimmage and 15 to play in a game.  They've already forfeited their opener.  What is happening?  The numbers game is affecting not just football. Soccer, field hockey and ice hockey.  You have lots of kids playing in various youth programs, but for some reason many stop playing after they reach middle school.  It is burnout?  Is it this desire to just play one sport and make travel teams, hoping that a college will be interested down the road?  With football, the concussion fear looms like a huge weight over every parents head now a days and with just concern.  They are afraid to have a son play football.  I played soccer til I was in high school and I stopped playing because it wasn't fun anymore and I also knew that I wasn't good enough of a player to make varsity or even the JV team.   There are more distractions than ever. The personal electronic devise age hadn't arrived yet when I grew up and my Mom and my friends parents wouldn't let us have Atari or Intellivision marathon gaming sessions everyday.  The nearest mall and arcade was 20 minutes from my house.   Times have definitely changed alright.  I'll be heading to practices at high schools this week and I'll have to ask my coaching friends that dreaded question.  How are your numbers this year?
On to other things.
I know just enough about horse racing to get by, but I didn't expect Will Take Charge to do so and win the Travers.  Didn't get the chance to watch the race, so You Tube here I come.
What ever happened to old fashioned romance?  A couple interesting notes from our show prep this week.  Nick Cannon, husband of Mariah Carey said that changing one of his kids diapers at night with his wife is romantic.  Not in my world it is.  Also there was this survey where a percentage of men felt a sense of guilt when giving their significant other flowers.  Women also were asked in the survey about romantic gestures and two interesting ones that made the list were putting down the toilet seat and handing over control of the remote.  What ever happened to opening the car door, pulling out the seat in restaurant or offering up an umbrella or your coat when it rains?
Ben Affleck as Batman.  I understand the controversy and it makes for great discussion on a blog like this and other social media sites.  Here's my view.  He tried the superhero thing in Dare Devil so there is only one way to go and that is up.  Not one of his better performances.
It's starting to wear on my nerves that everyday I end up picking a zucchini, yellow squash, or cucumber from the garden.  Still waiting on the big 3 and  I promised myself that I wouldn't dump out the potatoes that are growing in the bags until September 8th.  It's gonna be a long two weeks.
My niece Morgan came up from North Carolina to visit for a few days and she was so happy to see and hang out with my cat.  I'm learning more and more about them all time and it has me shaking my head sometimes.  They were best friends for about a day.  Then came the day Morgan was brushing her gently.  Meow is purring away, then looks back to see who was doing the brushing, and ran for her safe spot which is under my bed. Was very disappointed about that moment.
An earthquake hit Warren County this morning?  Really?  And about 13 miles from where I live!  Was I only one who didn't feel it?
Last but not least.  Two of my good friends tied the knot Thursday and they make a great couple.  They had the reception type get together yesterday. Very casual.  Was able to make the end of it.  I don't what I was more happier about.  Seeing the bottle of rum from Albany Distilling that I gave the groom for his 50th birthday two weeks earlier sitting at the bar; or the fact the real life Lucas, a.k.a me got the chance to dance with a really pretty girl.  It doesn't happen that often...Leccese out.

Another summer has gone by and I forgot to enjoy it again

Hi there.  My body clock is technically still on Morning Club time after filling in for Dan this past week, so I'm writing this entry just after 5am EDT.  I remember when I first wanted to be in radio.  My goal was to be a program director and host one of those politically incorrect, irreverent, satirical morning shows.  Doing voices and mocking people who do absurd and stupid things.  I am a morning person.   Just not getting up at 3:30am morning person.
One thing I must bring up.  Please don't get upset when we tease or mock each other on the air.  We love each other like family.  We don't mean it.   I purposely tried to not to pick on Pete this past week.   I know he has a strong loyal following of fans who post on the WCKM facebook page when we do.  The other night Lee Pecue actually was scolded by a listener who said to stop picking on me because I don't have a girlfriend.  It wasn't him, it was Mike who said something and it really did happen.  A person who was running for political office came into record a campaign spot.  The person asked me if I was single and that person said they could set me up.  Look I'm the king of self depreciating humor.   I'm 47 years old, never married and I can count on one hand the number of serious relationships I've been in.  Does it bother me at times?  Of course its does.  It's frustrating because I wouldn't mind being in a dating relationship.  I also believe that the marriage between a man and woman who love each other unconditionally (except for the pre-nup agreement, lol) is a wonderful thing. I admit I'm also way too picky and I could be married or dating if I lowered my standards.
On to other thngs
The late George Steinbrenner used to say how important it was to always to have the headline  on the back page in the sports section of the newspaper.  This whole Alex Rodriguez/Bio-Genesis mess scandal whatever you want to call it is not what I think "The Boss" had in mind when he said that.
VH1 used to have this show on called, " The Best Week Ever."  Alfonso Soriano is having one of those weeks.  5 home runs and 18 RBI's in 5 games with back to back 7 RBI games against the Angels.
In their last 50 games the Dodgers are 42- 8 with an .840 winning percentage.  Can't do much better than that.
Is there anyone out there who really thinks the Jaguars new uni look with the two colored matte finished helmet is good looking?  I didn't think so.
We had a jail break at my home.  The cat got out a week ago Thursday night and turned me into a nervous wreck.  I was worried sick she wouldn't come back.  But around 5am the next morning there she was after her little excursion waiting at the front door.  I opened it up and in she came acting like nothing happened and she just forgot her key to let herself in.
Garden has been real good. I just wish "The Big Three," a.k.a tomatoes, eggplant and peppers weren't so late this year.  Green beans have done well and there have been a bumper crop of cucumbers, zucchini and yellow squash.  Potatoes we'll see.  I promised that I wouldn't harvest them til September 8th which is the day after the first football game we do on WWSC.
Finally, the process starts all over again.  The start of football practice and unofficially summer comes to an end for me.  I've missed it again   No trip watch the races at Saratoga.  That planned over night trip to the Jersey Shore to Monmouth Park, Delicious Orchards, and the towns where I grew up or the minor league baseball games I wanted to see Time to read six newspapers a day.  In about a week I'll be making the rounds of the local high schools watching practices and talking to coaches.  Then there are the scrimmages and media day labor day weekend.  Before you know it, I'll be calling athletic directors and having rosters sent over so I can type them up.  Three weeks til the opener at Glens Falls High. ..Leccese out.

Just call me, "The Golf Mumbler."

Hi there.  There is nothing better on a Sunday than relaxing with everything on your list of things to do, done. So here I am catching up and writing this entry.
The title of this entry comes from an 18 hole experience in futility last Sunday known as playing golf with my Dad.  I wonder if all golfers do this.  Talk to yourself after every shot bad or good.  You hit a good shot and you start talking to ball asking it to draw, fade, get legs, come back or if your putting break more and go in the hole.  You hit a bad shot and you start using your full name and wonder aloud to the golfing gods why you even play this game.  Last week the pretty girl was completely ignoring me. (If you've ever read this blog and read my humorous view on golf, you'll laugh and know where I'm coming from.)  You've heard of the those people who talk to animals like the "Horse Whisperer."  Just call me the "Golf Mumbler."  I don't think we'll be winning any father and son team events anytime soon.
We've all had our "on the verge of road rage" moments and it happened to me not once but twice in the past week.  The first occurred Wednesday night heading home and while on Quaker Road around the Quaker Plaza two Mensa Society members who were following one an other made a complete U-turn from the east bound lanes and headed back west right in front of me and someone else at around 7pm.  The second one occurred yesterday when a genius from Vermont cut in front of me at the last minute from the right hand lane to get on the Northway at Exit 20 northbound when the traffic light turned on the left turn signal.  I wouldn't have minded that except the Nobel prize winner didn't use his turn signal!  That is my biggest pet peeve.  People who don't use their turn signals when passing or actually turning!  Using the cell phone, texting thing while behind the wheel is number 2.  It's great to be able to multi-task, but not while driving please.
Would someone tell Bud Selig to stop stalling and just announce the damn suspensions in the Bio-Genesis black cloud that is hovering over and has been the talk of baseball.  As for Alex Rodriguez, I don't think he should be banned from the game.  Suspend him for the rest of this year and til next years' All-Star game.  We often forget that when this whole steroid, performance enhancing drug, growth hormone, supplement stuff came up the owners were criticized for looking the other way.  There is some truth to that but remember one thing.  The players union was so powerful at that time under Donald Fehr and Gene Orza that getting any sort of testing in a collective bargaining agreement would have never happened!  It took congressional hearings to finally knock the unions power down a couple of notches.  I've also read that there is a chance that Fehr might come back to help the union and their current leader Michael Weiner.
One more thing regarding the whole PED mess in any sport.  The labs who make the stuff will always try to be one step ahead of the people who make the tests.
Riley Cooper, welcome to Paula Deen's world.
I had the pleasure of attending Wayne Stock VI at the North Creek ski bowl for a couple of hours.  It benefits a great charity called the North Country Helpers Fund.  If you've never been to the Ski Bowl its a great place with basketball and tennis courts, ball fields.  I heard the skiing is good in the winter too. Amazing performers and other activities were going on.  I met some wonderful people there, but to be honest I was out of my usual element.
Is it possible for the Mets score some runs for Matt Harvey please!
This weeks sign of the apocalypse.  Is Ellen DeGeneres really the best person the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences could find to host next years Oscar ceremony?
My favorite charity fundraising thing we do at WCKM takes place Tuesday night.  Go-Cart race at Adventure Family Fun Center at 6pm.  Love to see you there to support the drivers and have some fun with us.
Note to all my friends.  Having a good zucchini harvest so far and that means one thing.  I've got some baking to do.  Now where's that zucchini bread/muffin recipe.
Finally, In this world where NFL players are tearing up knees, bi-ceps, achilles, and having other season ending injuries during training camp, we have the case of Barry Church. The defensive back had to have root canal and dental surgery after chipping a tooth while eating a cherry Jolly Rancher candy.  How 'bout them Cowboys!
Two weeks til first high school football practice...Leccese out.

Catching up

Hi there.  Just to let everyone know the reports of, "The Greenhouse Effects'' death have been greatly exaggerated.  It's been like a lot of my life lately.  To put it simply, its called,  "finding the motivation."   After taking the notes down, actually writing the entry.  Darn Angry Birds Star Wars edition, lol.  I also have been lacking that motivation to go to the gym and work out.
Let's move on.  O.K. America's unofficial royal family a.k.a "The Kardashians" had there birth with Kimmy and Kanye welcoming a baby girl.  (Please tell me the kids name isn't really North).  As I write this entry Kate Middleton is in labor and the Brits will have something to celebrate.  I wonder if they'll announce it like the College of Cardinals do when they elect a new pontiff?  Look for smoke coming out of Buckingham palace's chimney.  Black smoke means a boy, white smoke means a girl.
I could have stayed in my home yesterday and done nothing all day but just sit in front of the TV and watch the final round of the British Open and then switch over to TVG to watch the races from Saratoga and Monmouth Park.  Luckily Phil Mickelson played the back nine of his life and made it possible for me to shower and go to the Warrensburg transfer station and make it back in time to catch the first race from the Jersey Shore.  I compare Phil Mickelson to NASCAR driver Tony Stewart.  When he's good, he's scary good.  Plus Phil also very likable very much like Tony.
I've been wondering this for a while.  Is hockey dying in our area? All these rumors about the Civic Center closing if another AHL team doesn't come in after the Phantoms leave.  Now  Utica is back in the AHL and some major money is coming from the state to renovate the Aud, The Lake George Forum not being profitable enough to put down ice this year and the real stab in the gut for me was the merger of the Glens Falls and S.Glens Falls/HF high school teams.  That I never expected in my lifetime. It's actually sad in a way.  One important thing about the Civic Center.  It's more than just hockey!  Binghamton and other places have been dying for a shot at the public high school athletic association basketball championships and take it from Glens Falls.  By telling everyone that the arena could close isn't gonna help our chances of keeping it when the next round of bidding takes place.
Less than a month til the start of football practice and we've released our broadcast schedule of games for the 2013 season  It will be up on the WWSC website shortly.
I did watch the first two innings of the All Star game just to see how Matt Harvey would do.  Plunking Robinson Cano accidentally with the third pitch of the game almost gave me a heart attack.
This Mets fans loved the Tom Seaver quote about Matt Harvey, "What I've seen, I've been duly impressed."
I know everyone loves it, but how serious can you take the home run derby when the pitcher is throwing batting practice type softballs?
I love this statement from Rachael Robinson who said baseball celebrates it history.  She said it at CitiField and in the main entrance which is named after and honors her late husband who didn't play for the team that plays in it and who's own history isn't celebrated enough there.
Note to MLB network.  Your All-Star game video celebrating New York and its National League history narrated by John Franco was a nice touch. Ignoring Shea Stadium was a major slap in the face to us Mets fans who miss the old place.  1969, the ball going through Bill Buckner's legs and Mike Piazza's home run in September of 2001 against the Braves that gave New York something to smile about again didn't happen at Ebbetts Field or the Polo Grounds.
On the home front, the landscaper (2 months late) finally showed up with the plans to do some serious yard renovation work and she omits one major thing.  The area for my vegetable garden was not a part of the picture. Oops.  Well back to the drawing board.  Nothing is ever easy at the house I live at.
The other day I'm on the air and I read this list of 10 things to help lead a happier life. One of them was not to be afraid to speak your mind.  If I started doing that, I may be happier, but I'd lose a lot friends.  I'll stick with being silently politically correct, keeping my big mouth shut, and somewhat depressed.
If you don't like what you hear on the radio, either turn it off or just change the dial please.  We had a caller actually complain to Dan and Pete after they congratulated Mikey on his engagement on the air.
Charity go-cart race is coming up August 6th and if you'd like raise money and race, you can download your form at www.wckm.com.
Finally, in light of what's been happening to some of these major court decisions and trial verdicts lately, remember the system works whether you agree with outcomes or not...Leccese out.

Is that brush and wild fire threat over yet?

Hi there.  I love it when after a winter of cold, snow, ice and then early spring mud season, you have a week or two of nice weather and we have an increased threat of wildfires.  I would love to have that declared just once during winter.  It's the middle of January and a lack of snowfall has put us under an increased threat of wildfires.  On to other things.
First up is the garden update.  I am hoping either Wednesday or Thursday to put plants in the ground and in their containers.  I go to a local retailer Sunday to buy natural soil enhancement products.  O.K it was 8 to 10 bags of cow manure.  They didn't have any in stock.  I go to another place Monday and problem solved!  Driving the 25 miles home gave the SUV a nice earthy smell to it.  I would love to see those little trees air fresheners come out with a scent like that to go along with pine, wild cherry, lavender, coconut and new car smell, lol.  Finally got the soil ready, now its a couple of warm days I need.
Those mid 40's highs we had Friday and Saturday with heavy rain could have been worse.  Whiteface Mountain ended up with 32 inches of snow!
Went to see Star Trek, "Into Darkness" and to all those Gene Roddenberry worshippers who have dammed J.J. Abrams I have one question.  What is your problem?  Star Trek was basically dead.  Abrams has brought it back to life without sacrificing Roddenberry's vision.  I thought the movie was great.  If you haven't seen it, I won't give anything away or criticize it.
The gear head, hard core racing fans must have thought Sunday was Christmas Day.  First you have breakfast and watch the F1 cars race through Monaco.  11am grab an early lunch and tune into the Indy 500.  Finally dinner time and while the grill is fired up the Sprint Cup 600 miler from Charlotte.
Sergio Garcia got a case of "athletes foot in mouth" disease with his comments about Tiger Woods. Not a bright thing to say.  If you remember it was Fuzzy Zoeller who said the same remarks first after Eldrick won the Masters and was commenting on what would be served at the Champions dinner.  Stupid is, is stupid does, Sergio.
Just when you think things have died down in Piscataway NJ, it has gotten worse for Rutgers.  They hire a former player who took them to a Final Four as head coach and in the press releases said he graduated from his alma mater when he didn't.  Now we find out that the new A.D. 16 years ago as head volleyball coach at a D1 school was accused by her entire team of doing some of the same things that the former head basketball coach did on the video we saw that lead to the whole mess to begin with.  Talk about drowning in quick sand.
There are way too many "so you think you can sing, dance, or have any real talent" shows on television these days.  Make them stop!
Finally from the Jeff Foxworthy, "You might be a redneck" category. A "3 is a magic number of just plain crazy."  First a couple who had too much to drink stabbed each other while having a fight over who would win American Idol.  Second is the Florida woman who attacked her neighbor with a New Orleans Saints lawn statue; and finally there was the North Carolina mom who had her son arrested for stealing and eating her Pop-Tarts.  None of those top what happened in Tasmania Australia where a ghost hunter set up cameras to record paranormal activities in his home only to find his younger live-in girl friend getting it on with his 16 year old son.  I can't and don't make those up folks...Leccese out.

It's tough to win from the inside post position

Hi there.  So here we are on the verge of another 3 day weekend.  Lots to get caught up on.
Leading off is Oxbow winning the Preakness.  Orb finished a disappointing 4th.  I knew the horse was doomed when it drew the inside post position.  Pimlico is a lot different than Churchill  Downs and trying to navigate a skinnier track with tighter turns and the shorter distance made it tough for Joel Rosario to get Orb where he needed to be to compete in the end.
When you're in the business of entertainment or sports, what attracts the casual fans?  Those big names who can get the occasional people that may not be normally interested either watching or listening because of the name factor. Often times I get sick of seeing or hearing about Tiger Woods, LeBron James and Sidney Crosby.  The big name stars in their sports who will attract the occasional fan into watching and drive up the ratings points.  From a loyal sports fan point of view, it makes them out to be bigger than the game itself.
Last month it was Pat Summerall, last week golf lost one its special individuals in Ken Venturi the long time golf analyst for CBS.  He was one a heck of player in his day and came this close to winning 2 Masters championships.
While on the topic of golf, got that first round of year in over the weekend, and for a change I was generally pleased with the results.  Hit the ball off the tee really well and my irons and short game will round into shape.  My putting however is like my luck with members of the opposite sex. Bad, and I struggle with with both, lol.
Mirrors lie, but shadows don't.  After seeing my shadow on the golf course Saturday it meant only one thing.  Three long months of going to the gym, working out as often as possible so I can see less of it.  I might have something coming up towards the end of summer and I want to look my best.
Ever wake up from a nap and one leg is still asleep?  It can be very painful, but not as painful as  it was when both legs were still asleep like mine were Sunday after taking a nap.
I want to know who were the judges and what was their criteria in choosing Miley Cyrus as #1 on Maxim magazine's hot 100 list?  On a lighter note, it was kind of funny yet sad at the same time when Manti Te'o's made up girlfriend was number 69 on the list.  Can we finally let this kid concentrate on playing football?  I didn't think so.
The SNY network produced a great hour long documentary on the 15 days of the Rutgers football team spring practice.  It was missing one key element and that being with all the controversy surrounding the Mike Rice video and the handling of it followed by the media storm that came on campus, how was it affecting Coach Kyle Flood and his players.  At times it seemed like a recruiting video to show perspective players.
Being a sports radio junkie and now it seems every lettered network has their own syndicated radio sports talk network, if I were the folks at Bristol Tech I would be worried about the programming they put out.  CBS has a better product in many time slots.
The garden is this close to being planted and I've already received a gifted tomato plant from a friend.  Now I have 10 that have to go in and it will be a late start.  I did all this digging in my raised beds the other day only to find out the landscaper is coming and will tear up and rebuilding them. My garden is definitely like Thanksgiving dinner.  You plan to cut back but what happens?  You end up not cutting back but instead cooking, or with the case of my garden growing more.  10 tomato plants instead of 6; and now I've added a 3rd type of potato.
Finally we have this weeks sign of the apocalypse and credit goes to my sports broadcast partner John Pratt and friend B.M. for pointing this one out.  At last night's Billboard Magazine Music Awards show, Justin Beiber received a Milestone award!  For what?  What's next?  The Kardashian family or Ozzy and Sharon getting the Lifetime Achievement Award for television excellence at the Emmy's?...Leccese out.

Catching up a variety of stuff

Hi there.  Hope you're enjoying the nice weather.  After seeing what Denver and Minneapolis and other parts of the mid west got recently, I was wondering when we were gonna a see late April early May storm that would drop a foot of wet snow here in the Adirondacks.  I'm not complaining though.
So the garden is looking good as its getting the soil ready for the plants time.  The indoor veggies I've started are looking real good, but I wish the pepper plants would grow a little more. One thing, who would have though that 32 foot long, 6 inch wide and 4 inch deep area of dirt be a pain in the tuchis to clear and move.  I took out this area behind the home to widen the path so a car or small truck could drive up to our garage which is off the back of the house.  The good part was that the soil is going into the potato bags.
Rain or shine, the Kentucky Derby will always be a must watch for me.  One thing I found fascinating is how few starts many of these horses have going into the Derby.  The horse I was rooting for, Verrazano, never ran as a 2 year old.  Winning the Triple Crown is harder and harder.  It's a tough six week stretch with 3 races of 3 different distances.  The money is now in stud fees.  If a two year old or even a three year old wins a couple of Grade 1 stakes races, cha-ching off to the courting barn, turn up the Marvin Gaye and start making future champs!
My boycott of the NHL has officially ended and there's nothing better than the Stanley Cup play-offs.
I made it through the year without seeing the Phantoms play.  For this hardcore hockey fan I go to watch the game.  The other activities I have no interest in.  Bringing in some guy to make a fool of himself, dancing and throwing t-shirts to everyone in attendance is not my idea of a good time.  It makes it even more painful to go when the team isn't competitive. I understand that not every team will be a winner on the ice, but if you show that extra effort fans in this town will show up and watch.  Glens Falls is so desperate for play-off hockey and the one thing the Icehawks/Frostbite could never do was win a play-off series.
Like my garden, the golf game is being worked into shape for the year.  Hit a couple of buckets of balls.  I wish I had an answer for the hook I have off the tee, though.  Can't figure out why I'm closing the club face on impact.
Yesterday I went into Lake George dressed like an eskimo compared to everyone else who with long pants and a windbreaker on and met some friends at SJ Garcia's for a Cinco De Mayo type get together.  I'm stealing this one and making it for myself at home.  I had this seafood quesadilla that had shrimp, crab, and talapia in it.  It was scary delicious!  I even channeled Mike Dubray and was dropping habanero hot sauce on it.
I had my Bizarre Foods, Andrew Zimmern moment Saturday when a co-worker made chili with the family jewels from a cow in it.  It was good and if I hadn't known what was in it, I would have never guessed what that was.  It reminded me of the time I went to the Bahamas and had Conch chowder.  I wasn't a spicy food fan at that point in my like and my Dad got a laugh out of that one.  I thought it was gonna be like a New England clam chowder.  Boy was I wrong.
One more thing before I end this entry I want to mention that I joined a new gym.  I left the freaks over at Core at the end of 2012.  I was unhappy with things there and the membership became a burden.  It's hard to be motivated to go in when the class you love the most is available to you only once a week and when you can workout out the two classes you least like are offered the most.  I felt for the longest time I let my friends down.  At times I still do.  Do I miss it? Sometimes.  Their is a short of list of about 5 or 6 people I really miss at Core.  It was for the best and the new place is small and I felt right at home when I stepped on a treadmill for that first 20 minute workout.  Sending out the freak love...Leccese out.

Thursday Thoughts

Hi there.  So did you get your taxes filed in time?  One of the good things about having a parent who is a CPA I never have to worry about that.
It's really been a quiet couple of weeks.  Nothing to say, "you've got be kidding me" or "you can't be serious."  It's been more of the serious side lately.
Leading off is, "The Masters" and congrats to Adam Scott and even more congrats to Angel Cabrera for his class.  Of course Eldrick Woods would have to steal the headlines with his illegal drop on the 15th hole during Friday's round.  Should he have been disqualified?  I have no idea or opinion on the matter.  I do know that golf is the only sport where a television viewer can call up and point out a rules violation and have a golfer DQed.  I wish I could do that when I watch the NBA or MLB.  "Hey ref, I'm a first time long time.  Check out the video you missed that charge!"
My respect for Bristol Tech's "Outside the Lines" took a major hit when they showed the video of Rutgers hoop coach Mike Rice's psycho act during practice and the eventual avalanche of protest that followed.  What Rice did was totally wrong. However, what has made me angry about this whole affair was that AD Tim Pernetti had punished Rice.  We tend to over react in this politically correct time we live in.  We just couldn't let it go could we.  The more we saw these acts, the more it incensed us and Pernetti and others were forced to resign as well as Rice being fired.
Dan Miner has been my friend for almost 25 years and trust me in all the years we've talked, having a bobble head doll made in our likeness has never been brought up.  There is and has been a lot stuff on our bucket lists, that one would be way down on the list.  What's interesting about how Dan does his job at games, is that he is more of a traditionalist when it comes to that sort of stuff.  The P.A. announcers job has evolved into being a cheerleader.  Before Dan took over for Greg Patrei, we would go to other arenas and mock the P.A. guy for the over the top style.
We lost two giants this week with the passing of comedian Jonathan Winters and play by play man Pat Summerall.
Unless I cave in and go either Friday or Saturday night, I've made it through the year without seeing the Phantoms play at home.
Finally,  I hope the sick individuals who decided to blow up a couple of pressure cookers loaded with nails, bb's and other nasty things at the finish line of the Boston Marathon Monday get caught quickly and the judge looks the defense attorney square in the eye and says, "Don't even think about using by reason of insanity."  Heal fast Boston.   We've got your back...Leccese out.

Its hard to be funny and introspective when you're.....

Hi there. I have to admit that I've been wanting to write this entry for over a week now, but as the title infers, its hard to be funny when you're angry, frustrated and depressed.  The past two weeks have stressed me out to the point that I was scared that my heart was gonna explode or I was heading for a mental breakdown.  The point of this blog has always been to make you laugh, and occasionally stop for a moment and think about something seriously.  I was this close to going off the deep end and writing a post that I've would have regretted.
On to what this blog is really about.  The funny and absurd.  We start last Friday night, where I go into one of Sam Walton's places in Queensbury to pick up a few items and head home.  It was busy.  I didn't mind waiting on line to use the self service check out.  I'd rather go to one those and do the work the work myself than have someone wait on me.  I pick up my things and as I arrive, there was this woman with her two sons using the self-service to buy bicycles! I'm not kidding.  I thought these were express check outs!  Another woman had a cart full of stuff well more than the maximum amount allowed and she had a small bicycle in her cart.  Then we had two individuals at the other two registers who had no clue as to what they were doing.  There should be a sign that reads, "Your I.Q. must be a minimum of this to use the self service registers!"  Sort of like the minimum height requirements on the rides at amusement parks.  My next nightmare be waiting on line while someone who has no clue on how to use them buys a set of 4 tires at the self service register.
Another bad shopping experience for you.  I go to one of the outlets to buy some new underwear.  So much for being a bargain.
And finally there was the search for razor blades.  I go to 3 or 4 stores looking for a 5 pack of the blades I need and there were none in stock.  I decide to buy a new razor.   The razor is cheaper than the replacement blades for it
No more shopping nightmares.  Thoughts from the NCAA's.  The zone defense that I saw Syracuse play against Miami was just plain scary good.  Michigan is on a hot streak that reminded me of the one they had when they beat Seton Hall for the title.  Witchita State you'll have your hands full against Louisville.  As for the Cardinals, the speed they play at is different than everyone else's.  More props to Kevin Ware who under the worst circumstances we find out is a pretty great kid.  CBS, thank you for using better judgement and showing the replay of that horrible injury only once.
This weeks public service announcement.  Friends, don't let friends type stupid tweets like one that the Bills Stevie Johnson did in which he suggested if North Korea was to consider starting a war against us,  bomb Foxboro Massachusetts home of the Patriots.  Uh Stevie, please tell us you didn't major in government at Kentucky.
There's no better feeling than receiving your tax refund and then the euphoria quickly subsides when writing out that check to pay for your car insurance.
I was this close to unfriending some people I care about on Facebook, but calmer heads prevailed.  We've all that feeling at least once, haven't we.
Finally this weeks sign of the apocalypse comes from Norway where a few schools moved exams so the students wouldn't cut or miss classes so they could attend Justin Beiber concerts in that country...Leccese out.

March Madness

Hi there.  It's been a while since the last post, but really their hasn't been a lot out there that has caught my attention to the point where you scratch your head and say either, "huh?" or "really?"
We start with March Madness.  Between the start of the Division 1 mens basketball tournament tomorrow, my alma mater making the Division 2 Elite 8 and Argyle and Lake George winning state championships at the Civic Center last weekend, my mind and body is completely basketballed out.  I used be able to handle of all it, but not any more.  One of the effects getting older.  It's like eating junk food.  When I was young a bag of Doritos could be inhaled with the force of one of those cyclonic action vacuums.  Now if I think of eating one more than the proper amount in the suggested portion, I fear the bad cholesterol and sodium alarm will go off in my body.
Another one of the depressing things about getting older was the end of an era with the last Big East basketball championship at Madison Square Garden.   Coaches like Jim Boeheim,  John Thompson, Lou Carnesecca, Rolly Massimino, a young Rick Pitino,  PJ Carlesimo, and Jim Calhoun.  Players like Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin, and Ray Allen just mention a few on an endless list of greatness.  Dave Gavitt was such a visionary.  It's a shame that football eventually would be the cause of the demise of basketball's "Great Conference."  Sorry ACC, the Big East in its prime was better hands down!  Sean McDonough was so eloquent with his words in describing the Big East last weekend.  North Carolina and Duke could never match the 1985 Final Four in Lexington when St.John's, Georgetown, and Villanova made it and the Wildcats did the impossible to Georgetown in the final.
One more hoops note and that was the 6,166 folks who showed up Saturday evening to see a Section 2 sweep by Argyle, Lake George and Watervliet in the Class D, C, and B finals.  Wow!  To all those other cities who would like to host the NYSPHSAA basketball championships.  Fuhget about it.  Not gonna happen.  Go after ice hockey and take it away from Utica, please!\
On to other things.  First Dennis Rodman goes to North Korea and then the Vatican to see the election of Pope Francis.  I'm sorry but Ambassador Worm doesn't have a nice ring to it.
The new Justin Timberlake song, "Suit and Tie."  It's gets into your head and becomes addictive. However, for the life of me why is Jay-Z in it and what is the point of the lyrics he rapping?
The History Channel is doing some documentary series on the bible and there is an uproar over the Moroccan actor who is playing the devil.  Some people are claiming he resembles  President Obama.    We need to lighten up.  Why can't we have some big scandal involving the PC police?
Congress, you fumbled the ball on not passing that semi-automatic weapons bill.
When my dad was home last month, I asked him to pick up watch batteries for some of my personal electronic devices from the jewelry store company he works for when he feels like it.  I told him what I needed and the store had none of them in stock.  I go to a reputable online place and had them in about a week.  What's up with that?
I might have to make a trip this summer to the southern fortress of solitude in Fripp Island, SC now that I know that the Charleston SC Riverdogs baseball team will be selling beer milkshakes.  Guinness caramel is one of the flavors.  Make mine a double and I'll have a brat with some garlic fries too.
Mets fans must have been close to jumping off the Shea Bridge when they found out that David Wright got injured during the World Baseball Classic and Tom Seaver had been suffering from a case of Lyme Disease.  If something had happened to Mike Piazza, well never mind.
Would someone keep Rangers coach John Tortorella away from caffeine at all costs, please!  Going off on Sam Rosen after he asks you a question during a post game interview is just not right.
Sunday I went to my friends open house at his maple sugar house in the Whitehall area and it was the first Sunday since the middle of last August that I didn't have to think about high school football, basketball or ice hockey.  Yes Virginia, the season ended up being that long.  If you want great syrup just Google Right at Home Maple.  I wouldn't steer you wrong when it comes to the good stuff.
If you want to know, I'm finally gonna get to starting eggplant and pepper seeds this weekend.
Bowl for Kids Sake is this Saturday at 3:30pm. Hope you can come out and support me, Mike, and Jason at Spare Time in S.Glens Falls.
Finally after seeing Glens Falls play for a state title in football and Argyle and Lake George win state basketball championships, another high school sports season has come to an end.  Time for golf and other things to pass the time til August 19th...Leccese out.

Hi there.  That number which headlines this entry says it all and speaks major volumes.  It's the money raised by the kids at South Glens Falls High School during this years' marathon dance.  With so many headlines that have to do bullying, budget cuts, shootings and other bad things happening in our schools recently, isn't it nice to know that the majority of the kids are good ones and we need more good stories like that and about them to balance out the bad.  Think about this.  40 people or groups will be helped by those kids.
On to other things. It was one long day Saturday.  Up at 4:30am to be on air and doing the Hits thing I do once a week from 6am to 9am. Then following a short break, high school hockey in Lake George at 3:30pm followed by a basketball game at the Civic Center shortly after the hockey game ended on WWSC.  Talk about being tired.  I was on fumes driving home around 9pm.  Not having to go to Utica this weekend is the only positive in Queensbury's tough loss last weekend.  Any high school sports broadcasts we do these last two weeks will be only a 5 to 10 minute drive.  Amen!
Speaking of Amen.  It seems the only people who manage to find my home with no problem are the ones who want to know if I've embraced the good lord as my savior.  They must have a special GPS or Google maps thing, or my friends have no desire to drive the minimum of 20 minutes to find me, lol.
Dennis Rodman playing diplomat? If any one could possibly becomes friends with that, "one Brazil nut or cashew short of a mixed nut can" leader of North Korea, why not the Worm.
Kanye West three years after dissing Taylor Swift at the MTV video music awards still won't shut up about it.  Kim Kardashian left Kris Humphries for this genius and is carrying his child? To quote Dan Miner, Kanye "Let it go already!"
Love this story from Milwuakee where one of the sausage costumes that the Brewers use during their famous in between innings race, while appearing at a curling event, ended up being stolen.  Who ever did it, put on the costume, went to bars and other places and took photos with patrons.  It was eventually returned.  See another reason why curling is addictive to watch during the Winter Olympics.
First it was Gangum Style and now the Harlem Shake.  What the heck are they in the first place?  People are posting 4 thousand Harlem Shake videos on YouTube a day!
Being a listener to various sports talk radio stations, if any coach other than Duke's Mikey K had spoken up about kids storming the court and the fear for his players' safety, would the hosts have made such a big deal about it and made it a hot button issue ?  I don't think so.
It was nice to see and hear conservative hot air bag Sean Hannity humbled by that Minnesota congressman on his tv show last week.
I may not be watching hockey, but its hard not to notice the Chicago Blackhawks' 22 game point streak without a regulation loss to start this abbreviated schedule.
Giving some props to the Edinburgh Scotland zoo and their attempts to get the Panda's to mate.  Pumping Marvin Gaye's classic "Let's Get it On" in the cage.  Now that's what I'm talking about!
Finally, its way too soon to start thinking about the 2013 high school football season, but the first draft schedule was released last week.  Yes, I looked at it.  Guilty as charged...Leccese out.

Catching up on many random thoughts

Hi there.  Well its been awhile since the last entry which was on the day of the Superbowl, so lets get caught up on some interesting and absurd stuff that has happened this month.
First Oscar Pistorius.  That whole murder case is becoming more twisted than the best soft pretzel.  Charles Barkley said it best, "I am not a role model."  It's really sad to tell you the truth.
Marco Rubio gives the Republican response after the State of the Union Address and he takes a drink of water during the speech and people are offended because?
It was scary seeing Ted Nugent as a guest during the State of Union Address, sort of like last years White House correspondent's dinner and Lindsey Lohan was on the invite list.
Spring training is in full swing in Arizona and Florida and Kevin Youkilis on his first day at Yankee camp says, "In my heart I will always be a RedSox."  If it were any other team, you'd get a hall pass.  Way to endear yourself to the fans of the team that a former executive who used to sign your paycheck called, "The Evil Empire."
I said this last year and I'll say it again.  Either I'm getting old and growing up or my man card should be taken away when I have no interest in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue and who's on the cover.  I think her name is Kate Upton, right?
I watched it on Saturday and no matter how hard you try to make everybody feel safe, crashes like the one that occurred at the end of Nationwide race do happen.  Jimmy Johnson said it best, "Even under most the perfect conditions, a perfect storm can happen."  I just hope all those folks who got hurt from the debris will be O.K.  NASCAR will do it best to continue make everything safer for both the the driver and fans.  Now if they could only do something about the injuries caused by flying strands of beads and people fighting over them in the stands and infield.
Good for Danica Patrick for winning the top spot in qualifying.
The Golden State Warriors who are one of those NBA teams quietly having a good year, last Friday trot out these gold unis with sleeves on them!  The pinstriped shorts didn't help the cause for them either.  Those were double bag ugly.
Carmelo Anthony plays one year at Syracuse, leads them to the National Championship, bolts for the NBA and has his number retired last weekend.  It's not right.
This weeks sign of the apocalypse.  It was in the local paper that the Calgary Flames are considering moving the Abbotsford Heat to off all places...Utica!  Tell me they are not gonna be playing in the Aud.
In all fairness to Seth MacFarlane and his opening number and overall performance as host of the Academy Awards, what did you expect from the creator of "Family Guy" and "Ted?" A nice quiet, politically correct, golf applause type show?  I told Dan Miner and John Pratt the song would have been much funnier if he had mentioned other slang and offensive terms for the body part he sung about.   Next year have Chelsea Handler or Sarah Silverman host and do the same song only referencing male actors and their body parts to balance everything out.
Seeing a photo of Helen Hunt on the red carpet and she was so, well you know smoking hot. There I said it. If I was married or in a dating relationship, Helen Hunt would be my hall pass.  I wish some sitcom would bring her and Paul Reiser back just once to reprise Paul and Jamie Buchman.  Come on "How I met your Mother" want to bring me back? Have Paul and Jamie be cousins of Ted or whoever the mother is gonna be in a sweeps type episode.
One more Seth MacFarlane note and I can relate to this one.  In regards to his relationship status he said, "I'm open to getting married, but actors are not easy people to date.  You end up sharing that person with this other mistress that is their career.  I very much like the traditional courtship method of making a date.  That's what they do in normal places, but Hollywood's not normal."  I kind of feel that same way in regards to being in radio and on the air.
Lays is holding this contest to create a new flavor of potato chip.  The 3 finalists are: Cheesy Garlic Bread, Siracha (which is an Asian hot sauce) and Chicken and Waffles!  Chicken and Waffles?  Don't knock 'em til you try 'em.
Finally with all the local teams playing in the Sectionals,  it is hard to be everywhere at once with a limited staff.  I hope you can understand that it isn't easy choosing what games we do on WWSC and I am sorry if you feel your team is getting slighted by us not doing your teams' game.
Maple sugar season has started!..Leccese out.

Superbowl XLVII and other thoughts as the birthday approaches

Hi there. So here it is.  Big Game Sunday and the only in depth analysis you'll get from me is: 49ers 27, Ravens 20.
I want to see Beyonce have a "so-called" wardrobe malfunction while performing, "Single Lady" during the half-time show just so we can have more protests and controversies.  Like we need anymore.
Boy has the PC police been working overtime this week.  Coca Cola ad considered offensive to a minority group..  Volkswagen ad considered offensive to a religious group.  My favorite though was Taco Bell pulling a humorous ad about what to bring to a party because and I'm not making this up, 'It discourages people from eating vegetables!"  If anyone should be protesting Taco Bell, it should be Mexican restaurant owners who serve authentic cuisine from Mexico and who know what a real Taco looks and tastes like.  FYI- The tortillas aren't crispy shells that are the flavor of Nacho Cheese or Ranch Doritos people!  I admit to not being the biggest Mexican food fan.  However, if you put a plate of slow cooked shredded chicken or pork with a rich mole' sauce and some queso fresco on top in front of me; it doesn't stand a chance.
Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow.  Sorry, my cat hopped on the keyboard and starting typing.
One more Superbowl commercial to be aware of and that is for Go Daddy!  I'm hoping the actor who got to kiss model Bar Rafaeli in it purposely screwed up a couple of the takes.  I was reading where it took them 45 times to get it right.  If he didn't at least once, he should have his man card taken away.
Not one, but two "This weeks sign of the apocalypse."   Number one is Kris Jenner, is in talks to have a weekday talk show.  We've started scraping the bottom of the barrel haven't we.  Number 2.   The radio station in Australia is considering re-hiring the two idiots who called the hospital where Kate Middleton was staying for her morning sickness and pulled that stunt. Well you know how that ended up.  They belong in a jail cell with Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis.  Or if they will be hired back, they should be given jobs that is appropriate for their talents.  Cleaning the station toilets with their tongues.
I want to let the members of Train know that their song, "Hey, Soul Sister" has been officially knocked off the top of the list of songs that if I'm on my death bed and want my life to end; play that song in a continuous loop until I flat line.  The Lumineers, "Ho Hey!" is now on top.  Two minutes and forty one seconds of my life I never get back every time I hear that song.  Brutal, just plain brutal.
This Giant fan feels Bill Parcells doesn't belong in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  I don't think Cris Carter is a Hall of Famer either.  But somehow they got in.
Is Rachael Ray's talk show having ratings problems?  Couldn't they find anyone else and better than Regis Philbin to co-host with her on occasion?  It's bad enough that every time a baking segment is on we have to see Buddy Valastro a.k.a, "The Cake Boss."  That guy gives me the creeps.
Former Mayor of NYC Ed Koch passed away at age 88.  He was far from perfect and had a long list of friends and just as many enemies.  He was also a New York treasure.  I loved this quote of his, "I don't get ulcers, I give them out."
I think the President needs to spend more time working on ending the debt crisis and getting our kids home from Afghanistan than spouting off in an interview about if he and the first lady had a son their reluctance to having the child try out for and play football.  You could say that about any sport.  It's like they don't have concussions or head trauma issues in soccer, hockey, baseball or lacrosse.
Note to the NRA.  We're not trying to take your guns away or infringe on the second amendment.  We're trying to make our society safer.
Friday night I was in Fort Ann broadcasting a basketball game that ended up being a blowout, but seeing someone actually dress up in a school mascot costume was totally cool.
Love the look of the new basketball court at the Civic Center.
If you're ever up in my neck of the woods in Chestertown and are looking for a casual place with a solid beer selection and great food, try the Hemlock Lodge.  Its been a long time since I had a great burger and Wednesday night had one with my cousin who in town on a business trip.
My cousin was telling me that his youngest son who is now a sophomore in high school has 3 to 5 hours of homework a night during the week and 8 hours on the weekend.  Is that the norm?  Am I that out of touch not ever wanting to have kids and be a parent?
Enjoy the game and remember to eat your veggies!..Remember the PC Police are watching you and could strike at any time without warning...Leccese out.
